An Awami League leader of Satkhira has been allegedly abducted a day after he complained against a fellow party leader – a newly-elected upazila chairman.
Satkhira Awami League adviser and a former assistant public prosecutor Mozahar Hossain Kantu was abducted from his home past Thursday midnight, family members claimed.
Police have acknowledged the claim and said they are searching for the lawyer. However, no progress was reported until Saturday afternoon.
Mozahar and his wife Rozina Parvin, a woman chairman candidate, alleged rigging against the newly-elected Kaliganj upazila chairman and upazila unit Awami League President Sheikh Waheduzzaman on the March 15 polls.
The claim was made in a joint press conference with another vice chairman candidate Sayed Mehedi held on Wednesday.
Rozina Parvin alleged that Chairman Waheduzzaman was behind the “abduction” and alleged that her husband was a victim of enforced disappearance.
A man said to have called out Mozahar from his Kaliganj bazar residence around 1:30am early on Friday, according to Rozina Parvin.
“Chairman Waheduzzaman threatened to burn down our house and attack him,” she said.
However, Sheikh Waheduzzaman denied the claims and said: “Mozahar had fled in fear that someone might hurt him because of his allegations.”
The Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge Golam Rahman said a case has been filed in this regard. “We are trying to trace the missing advocate.”
Locals said there has been enmity between Waheduzzaman and Mozahar for a long time.
