Zillur's first death anniversary being observed

The first death anniversary of former president and veteran politician Md Zillur Rahman is being observed across the country in a befitting manner on Thursday.

Family members of the late national leader, different political parties, social, cultural and professional bodies observed the day with various programmes, including the placing of wreaths at his grave at Banani graveyard in the morning, reports BSS.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised a discussion at the seminar hall of the Central Public Library at Shahbag square at 10am on Thursday to mark Zillur Rahman's first death anniversary.

Furthermore, a milad and doa mahfil will be held at the Gulshan residence of the late national leader after Asr prayers. Central leaders of the ruling Awami League will attend the programme.

The day is also being observed at seven unions in his home town in Bhairab with milad mahfils and discussions.

Zillur Rahman was a hero of the historic language movement of 1952 and a close associate of Father of The Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

As a close associate of Bangabandhu, the late Awami League leader participated in all the national movements, including that of the historic language movement of 1952 and the war of liberation in 1971.

The late president was literally the guardian of the family of Bangabandhu following the August 15 massacre of 1975.

Rahman discharged his responsibilities as the general secretary of Awami League for 12 years during five different terms.

Late Zillur Rahman became the 19th head of the state of Bangladesh on February 12 in 2009.
