Three of a family killed, six injured in microbus cylinder blast

Three women of a family were killed and six passengers critically injured in a microbus gas cylinder blast in Fatikchhari upazila yesterday.

The dead were identified as  Halima Begum, 65, mother of Dubai-expatriate Safiul Alam, his mother-in-law Bulbuli Akhter, 60, and sister-in-law Parveen Akhter, 30.

Mohammad Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhujpur police station, told the Dhaka Tribune 17 people, including the driver of the microbus, were on their way to Harrualchhari, after receiving Dubai-returnee Shafiul Alam from Chittagong’s Shah Amanat International Airport around 4am.

“The gas cylinder of the vehicle exploded while it was crossing Suabil area, leaving the three women dead on the spot and six passengers injured,” he said.

The injured were expatriate Safiul Alam, 40, his daughters Promy Akter, 7, Sarmin Akter, 11, Loveli Akter, 9, and Sumi Akter, 12, daughter of Safiul’s elder brother Abdus Sattar and Morium Begum, 65, mother-in-law of Abdus Sattar.

Of them, four were sent to the Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said SI Jahirul Islam, in-charge of CMCH police camp.

The dead and injured were all from Nur Islam Sowdagor Bari of Amanbazar area under Harualchhari union of Fatikchhari upazila, said police.
