Some bodies that are said to have surfaced in the Meghna River adjacent to Dwip upazila, Noakhali, have been denied by local law enforcement agencies.
At least three bodies have been spotted since Friday, locals said. Some of them were seen ragged about by dogs; filling the area with a bad stench.
Bidhan Chandra Das, a teacher of Char Amanullah Government Primary School, said three bodies were floating in the Meghna, south near Bou Bazar on Saturday.
Workers' Party of Bangladesh Hatia upazila Secretary Anwar Hossain said locals spotted dogs tearing apart one of the bodies in the Hatia area on Sunday morning. “Another body was spotted later in the afternoon.”
Anwar Hossain said he had seen one body earlier on Saturday at Chairman Ghat area. A milkman Miraz from Sukhchar union said he saw two bodies on the Meghna River.
However, it is unclear as to how many bodies have been spotted in total.
Hatia police station Officer-in-Charge Syed Mohammad Fazle Rabbi and Coast Guard Station Commander Hamidur Rahman said they had no information regarding this matter until Sunday.
