A 13-year-old girl, who was reportedly raped, has committed suicide after being deprived of justice at Madhabpur upazila of the Habiganj district on Sunday.
The victim, Taslima, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her room in the afternoon; a day after a “Kangaroo court” acquitted the rapist.
Locals said Taslima was allegedly raped by Babul Mia of the same village on her way to visit neighbor’s residence on Tuesday afternoon.
Hearing the cry of the victim, locals rushed in and rescued the girl. However, Bablu managed to flee the scene.
The family members of the victim did not lodge any cases as influential individuals of the village assured them that the issue woud be settled in arbitration.
Later, the arbitration led by local leader Nurul Islam asked Bablu to give Tk 5000 to the victim girl as compensation. They also asked Bablu to seek pardon for his “misdeed.”
After being deprived of justice, Taslima committed suicide, claimed family members.
Madhabpur police station Officer-in-Charge Amal Kumar Dhar confirmed the suicide to the Dhaka Tribune.
But, he binned the rape allegation and claimed that Taslima committed suicide as she failed to continue her love affair with Bablu.
No initiatives have been taken in this connection till filing the report at 8:40pm.
