Third phase UZ polls: Vote counting begins

The counting of votes in 81 upazila parishads across 41 districts commenced on Saturday.

The voting began at 8am and ended at 4pm without any breaks amid violence, capturing of polling stations and election boycott.

A total of 1,119 candidates are contesting in the 81 upazila parishads polls. Of them, 419 are vying for the chairman posts, 423 for the vice-chairman and 277 for the women vice-chairman posts.

One judicial and four executive magistrates have been deployed in every upazila. The commission has set up 5,444 polling stations with 35,331 polling booths in the upazilas.

A total of 1, 31, 85,013 voters exercised their voting rights in the polls. Of them, as many as 66, 00,131 are male and 65, 67,832 female.

Army personnel, along with other law enforcement agencies including BGB, RAB, police and Ansar, have been deployed in the respective upazilas to maintain law and order and ensure that the polls are held in a free and fair manner.

Earlier, the first phase polls were held on February 19 in 97 upazilas while the second phase was held on February 27 in 115 upazila parishads.
