Ballot snatching: Polling suspended in Lakshmipur

Polling in two centres have been suspended in  Kamalnagar upazila of the district following snatching ballot box by the ruling party supporters.

The polling centres are: Hajiganj Forkania Madrasa polling centre and Uttar-Paschim Char Mathin Government Primary School centre.

Presiding Officer Mahfuzur Rahman of Hajiganj Forkania Madrasa polling centre said voting was suspended as the Awami League activists locked in a clash with police as the law enforcers barred them from snatching ballot box.

Four policemen and a journalist were injured during the clash on Saturday afternoon.

The injured were Constable Shafiq, Constable Prithi Bindu Chakma, Constable Swarup, Constable Al-amin and journalist Hossain Ahmed Helal of Bangla Vision.

Police detained Awami League activist Abul Bashar from the spot.

Kamalnagar police station Sub-Inspector Ayad Ali said: “Awami League activists locked into clashes with police as the law enforcers prevented them from snatching ballot boxes. Police fired six rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control.”

Later, police recovered the ballot box from the spot, he added.

Hours after, voting in Uttar-Paschim Char Mathin Government Primary School centre was also suspended over ballot snatching by the ruling party supporters.

Presiding Officer of the centre Babu Rupok Chandra Banik said former convener of upazila Awami League Chhatra League Md Sagor was injured during snatching ballot box.

He was sent to upazila health complex.
