The members of ruling Awami League and Chhatra League have allegedly attacked the motorcade of BNP-backed candidate Abdul Zabbar in Chandanaish upazila of Chittagong on Saturday morning.
Abdur Zabbar said: “The supporters of Awami League and Chhatra League attacked and vandalised my car while I was going to Hasondondi Madrasa centre.”
He claimed the ruling party men also tried to take position in the polling centre.
The BNP-backed candidate said he has informed the police regarding the matter.
Additional Superintendent of Police Nazmul Hassan said: “The supporters of Awami League and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) along with LDP’s candidates were locked in a quarrel in front of Hasondondi Madrasa around 11am.”
At a stage of the quarrel, the supporters locked into chase and counter chase.
He said: “No one has been injured and no car has been vandalised.”
Meanwhile, five people have been injured in a chase and counter chase between the supporters of Awami League and LDP backed candidates in the upazila around 11am.
The injured could not be identified immediately.
However, the police did not give any information regarding the injuries and political identity of the people involved in the chase and counter chase.
Local sources said the supporters of Awami League and LDP backed candidates entered into 400 gauge area of Dohajari Union Complex polling centre around and were trying to influence the voters.
Later, both the groups locked into a chase and counter chase that left five people injured.
Chittagong District Assistant Police Super (Potia Circle) Shamim Hossain said: “They had violated election rule and entered into 400 gauge area of the polling centre.”
He said police charged baton and was later forced to fire bullets to disperse them.
Meanwhile, the people were detained in connection to the matter.
“I have not got any information regarding injuries in the incident,” the ASP added.
