The Election Commission has postponed the election of Shreepur upazila parishad election, scheduled for March 15.
Election Commissioner Abu Hafiz told this to journalists after a meeting of the commission on Tuesday afternoon.
“The Election Commission has decided to postpone the Shreepur upazila election due to the pre-election violence and political unrest over the poll in the upazila," he said.
A BCL leader ,who was hit by a bullet on Saturday, during a clash between the supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate and its rebel candidate in Gazipur, died at Apollo Hospital in the capital on Sunday.
The supporters of the candidates locked horns in a fierce clash involving firearms and sharp weapons when attending a party meeting in the area, leaving at least 50 people injured. They also torched several vehicles.
On March 7, activists of local Awami League and its affiliates laid a blockade on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Shreepur of Gazipur district after RAB personnel had picked up upazila parishad chairman candidate Abdul Jalil.
