Update : 10 Mar 2014, 08:20 AM

A total of 1,01,758 Bangladeshi pilgrims will perform Hajj this year.

Of them, 10,000 will perform Hajj under the government arrangement while 91,758 under the private arrangement.

Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told the reporters after the cabinet meeting held on Monday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

In this regard, the government has formulated fresh arrangements for pilgrims aspiring to perform Hajj this year, he said.

Meanwhile, a proposed Umrah policy has been added along with the existing Hajj policy from this year.

Musharraf Hossain said the government will arrange the transportation of 10,000 pilgrims this year with state facilities under two separate package programmes.

The first package will cost Tk354,316 while the second will cost Tk295,776. An additional charge of Tk10,500 will be applicable for Kurbani purposes.

However, the total cost may vary due to exchange rate fluctuation between US dollar and Saudi Riyal.

The minimum cost should not be less than TK2,95,776 to ensure standard facilities for the pilgrims in case of private management, he said.

The cabinet secretary said this year the number of hajj pilgrims would be less than the previous year as the Saudi government has reduced the quota by 20% due to massive renovation works in Makkah.

According to Saudi government, the holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on October 4 this year subject to the sighting of moon.
