Law enforcers and customs officials have seized 90 gold bars worth at least Tk3.5 crore from the capital on Sunday. Four people have been held in this regard.
Sixty bars were seized from three auto-rickshaw passengers in the Banani area around 4pm. The rest were seized from Hajrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The three detained from Banani were Mohammad Sahabuddin Ahmed, 45, Shahinur Rahman, 30 and Abul Kashem, 40. The detainee held from airport was Siyam Ahmed, 35.
In Banani, the auto-rickshaw collided with a private car, Gulshan zone police Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Lutful Kabir said.
The passengers of the auto-rickshaw were searched, he added. Police found 60 gold bars in their luggage. The gold was smuggled in through Chittagong airport.
“The detainees said they were carrying the gold to Dhaka for money.”
Siyam was detained from Dhaka airport after customs officials searched him over suspicion, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said.
Thirty gold bars were found with him, CIID director general Moinul Khan said.
