Sreepur poll shootout: 2 gun toters held

Two identified gun-wielders of the Upazila Parishad election shootout in Sreepur upazila, Gazipur have been detained from the district on Sunday.

The identities, as provided, are Shahjahan Kamrul, 40, son of late Fayaz Uddin from Kishoreganj, and Masum Khan, 43, son of Ibrahim from Gazipur Sadar.

Gazipur police Superintendent Abdul Baten produced the arrestees at a press briefing in the evening.

They were held on Sunday afternoon, the official said without specifying the location of their detention. “Two shutter guns have been confiscated from them.”

Law enforcement agencies were on the field to catch others involved in the shootout, he added.

Earlier, 11 other people were detained from the Sreepur upazila over the incident, Sreepur police Officer-in-Charge Amir Hossain had said.

On Saturday, at least 50 were injured and about eight vehicles were burned when supporters of two chairman of the ruling Awami League clashed.

The clash lasted for about four hours and supporters of both parties were seen wielding guns in the open, what the dailies have reported with pictures.
