Ashraf: It was a ‘great political mistake’

Update : 09 Mar 2014, 01:47 PM

BNP has done a “great political mistake” by boycotting the 10th parliamentary election.

Awami League General Secretary and also Local Government and Rural Development Minister Syed Ashraful Islam made the statement on Sunday.

“It was a great political mistake of BNP for not participating in the last parliamentary poll,” he told reporters, adding: “They should not have boycotted the last parliamentary poll.”

Ashraf was talking to the journalists after submitting the nomination papers of the ruling party’s candidates for the reserved women seats in parliament to the Election Commission Secretariat in the capital’s Agargaon.

However, the minister said BNP had lost in winning people’s desire and it will not be recovered easily.

“Awami League contested in the general polls under Zia, Ershad, Ayub and Yahia’s autocrat rule for people’s choice and democracy and BNP has lost the democratic urge through boycotting the poll, it is not acceptable,” Ashraf said.

While talking about BNP’s participation in the ongoing upazila polls and the leading position he said: “It cannot get the real taste out of it, as one cannot get the taste of milk from a yogurt drink.”

“It is a great achievement of the ruling government as all are accepting the government for holding the poll in a free and fair manner,” he also said.
