Shreepur UZ poll on fear as fierce clash erupts

A fierce clash between rival candidates of the upcoming upazila election for Shreepur upazila of Gazipur district has made a big ordeal out of the circumstances in the area.

Police have arrested nine people so far allegedly involved in the incident.

Two platoons of BGB personnel were deployed to avert further violence.

The arrested are former Awami League activist Yusuf Kazi, Juba League member Kafiluddin Mandal, Chhatra League activists Habibur Rahman Jewel, Krishna Bashfor, Sagar, Liton, Shipu, Nazmul, Selim, Imran and Sohel.

The hour-long clash erupted near Sreepur municipality around 11am on Saturday between chairman candidate Awami league leader Abdul Jalil and current upazila chairman also district Awami League organising Secretary Iqbal Hossain Sabuj.

The supporters of the candidates locked horns in a fierce clash involving firearms and sharp weapons when attending a party meeting in the area, leaving at least 50 people injured. They also torched several vehicles.    

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge confirmed about the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “No case has been lodged so far in this connection.”
