Shaky Pirojpur buildings put employees at risk

Update : 08 Mar 2014, 07:09 PM

Employees working at complaint centre and 33/11KV substation of Pirojpur Power Division have found themselves at risk as the buildings have been in dilapidated condition for years.

The authorities concerned have been informed of the situation, though no step has yet been taken in this regard.

The complaint centre is located beside Shahid Omar Faruk road in Pirojpur town. Linesman of the centre Shyamlal Boral said he and an assistant worked in shifts at the building measuring 15ft by 12 ft.

Speaking about the faulty building, Shyamlal said rods were now visible as those had come out of the roof.

“Plaster from the ceiling sometimes drop down and during rainy season, water falls on my body. This has been the condition for many years,” he said.

Switchboard attendant of the 33/11KV substation Anwar Hossain said two air conditioners were installed to keep the equipment cool. “One of those, however, went out of service and the other has almost stopped working as well.”

“Electricity is supplied to different areas of the district from here but the authorities have been ignoring the need to repair the building,” Anwar observed, adding power supply would be severely disrupted if any accident occurred in the building.

The local counsellor (complaint centre and sub-centre/substation) said he was aware of the building’s condition but the higher authorities had shown reluctance to carry out necessary repair work.

Contacted, deputy assistant engineer of West Zone Power Distribution Company’s (WZPDC) Pirojpur office Md Saidur Rahman said repair work had started.
