5 killed, 30 injured in accidents

A total of three people were killed and 47 injured in separate road accidents yesterday in Patuakhali, Jhenaidah, Bhola and Natore.

In Patuakhali, 19 were injured after a Madaripur-bound picnic bus with around 45 Madaripur Government Nazimuddin College students fell into a roadside ditch on the Kuakata-Patuakhali road in the morning, reports our Barisal correspondent.

Officer-in-Charge Tarekuzzaman of Kalapara police station said the bus of Turan Paribahon had lost control near Rajopara of Kalapara upazila around 8am. He said the students were returning from Kuakata after their picnic.

The driver and the conductor of the bus fled the scene after the accident, he added.

Among the 19 injured, 16 were released after primary treatment at Kalapara Upazila Health Complex.

The other three were sent to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital.

In Jhenaidah, a man was killed and six injured after a bus and a local human haulier collided head-on near Kala-Lakkhipur area on the Jhenaidah-Dhaka highway in the afternoon, reports our correspondent.

The dead was Sudeb Kundu, 60. The injured were rushed to Magura Sadar Hospital.

In-charge of Hatgopalpur police outpost Abdul Momin said the dead was travelling on the human haulier. The Chuadanga-bound JR Paribahan bus from Dhaka managed to flee immediately.

In Bhola, a nine-year-old schoolboy was killed in a road accident on the Kabir Miah Brick Field Road in Joya village of the district’s Borhanuddin upazila, reports UNB.

The dead M Yeamin was a class II student of a local primary school.

Witnesses said the accident took place around 9am when a goods-laden shallow engine-run vehicle ran over Yeamin while he was crossing the road on way to his school, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Natore, a man was killed and five others were injured when a microbus crashed into a roadside tree in Kachihata area of Gurudaspur upazila under Natore district, reports BSS.

Fuad Ruhani, officer-in-charge of Bonparha Highway Police Outpost, said the deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 37, of Bagatiparha upazila of the district.

He said the accident took place around 7:30am when the vehicle’s driver lost control over the steering after crossing the Kachhikatha No 10 bridge on Bonpara- Hatikumrul highway.
