Activists of local Awami League and its affiliates had laid a blockade on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Shreepur of Gazipur district on Friday afternoon as RAB personnel picked up upazila parishad chairman candidate Abdul Jalil.
The blockade that began around 2:30pm and ended at 7:15pm caused about 50km tailback in both ends on the highway.
The supporters of Abdul Jalil withdrew the blockade when the chairman candidate reached the spot at 7pm after his release.
Gazipur 3 constituency MP Rahmat Ali told the Dhaka Tribune that RAB handed Jalil over to Nurunnabi Akand, chief convener of Jalil’s election steering committee, at Gazipur Primary Teachers’ Training Institute at 4:30pm.
Officer-in-Charge of Shreepur police station Amir Hossain said: “RAB had picked Jalil up from Chhitpara area under the upazila around 2pm."
However, there are no formal complaints against Jalil, the OC confirmed.
Locals said Jalil was one of four candidates in the upazila poll, with the symbol of the pineapple. He was nominated by the upazila wing of the party.
