Navy lead gold count after first day

Mezbah Ahmed of Bangladesh Navy and Shirin Akter of BKSP clinched the respective gold medals in the men’s and women’s 200m sprinting events on the opening day of the 38th National Athletics Championship at the Army Stadium in the city yesterday.

Mezbah clocked 21.76s to finish ahead of two Bangladesh Army participants - Md Azharul and Md Shariful – who finished second and third respectively. Mezbah was also part of the winning 4*100 relay team along with Kazi Imran, Abu Rayhan and Golam Mortaza.

Meanwhile, Shirin crossed the finish line with a time of 24.90s – ahead of BJMC’s Zakia Sultana and Shohagi Akter, who finished second and third. Zakia and Shohagi however, went on to take the gold in the women’s 4*100 relay, along with Papia Rani Sarkar and Nazmun Nahar Beauty.

 In the day’s other events, Navy’s Alamgir Hossain won gold in men’s 400m hurdles, Azharul Islam of BJMC finished first in the men’s javelin event, BKSP’s Paboni Hoq won gold in the women’s high jump, Army’s Mehedi Hassan bagged gold in the men’s 1500m run, the Navy’s Mirona came in first in the women’s 1,500m run and BJMC’s Monirul Islam of BJMC claimed gold in the men’s 5,000m sprint.

After the first day, Bangladesh Navy has four gold medals, BJMC has three and BKSP two.
