Trading, killing rare animals now ‘haram’

Update : 06 Mar 2014, 12:02 PM

A new Fatwa has deemed illegal hunting and trade of endangered animals haram, what has been hailed by wildlife enthusiasts all over the world.

The Indonesian Ulema Council has declared the new Fatwa and has declared such activities “unethical, immoral and sinful,” the AFP reported.

“All activities resulting in wildlife extinction without justifiable religious grounds or legal provision will be haram,” the council’s Secretary Asorrun Ni’am Sholeh said.

“These include illegal hunting and trading of endangered animals,” he added.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has hailed the fatwa and said it was a “positive step forward.”

“It provides a spiritual aspect and raises moral awareness which will help us to protect and save the remaining wildlife,” WWF Indonesia Communications Director Nyoman Iswara Yoga said.
