Update : 03 Mar 2014, 07:40 AM

A Chittagong court has sent Eastern Railway General Manager Yusuf Ali Mridha to prison in five cases of misdeed over recruitment in the Bangladesh Railway.

Mridha surrendered to the court on Monday morning and pleaded for bail, but Metropolitan Sessions Jude SM Mojibur Rahman binned the plea and sent him to jail.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (prosecution) Rezaul Masud confirmed the Dhaka Tribune of the development in this regard.

A total of 13 cases were filed against Mridha for irregularities in the recruitment process. Arrest warrant was issued against him on the charges pressed in five cases.

On the night of April 9, 2012 former Rail Minister Suranjit Sengupta's assistant Omar Faruq Talukdar was held with a large sum of money at the capital.

Reports in several media said that the money amounted to over Tk70 lakh, what was obtained through bribes in exchange for favouritism in the railway recruitment.

Later on September that year, Anti-Corruption Commission sued several cases over the irregularities in the recruitment. Charges were pressed on August, 2013.
