11 killed, 35 injured in road accidents

At least 11 people were killed and more than 35 sustained injuries in separate incidents of road accidents across the country in the last two days.

In Comilla, a bus carrying pilgrims to Raipur, fell into a roadside ditch in Muradnagar upazila around 7:00am yesterday leaving three people dead and 25 injured, said Nazim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station.

The deceased are Md Motaleb, 70, his son Shah Alam, 45, Alauddin, 60 of Raipur village of Narsingdi Sadar upazila, reported our Comilla correspondent.

The injured were admitted to the Muradnagar upazila health complex.

The passengers were returning from Sonakanda after attending a waz-mahfil.

Two people died on the spot and 10 sustained injuries at Bhaluka in Mymensingh yesterday when a Dhaka bound bus hit a pickup van from behind. The pickup was carrying passengers to Maowna in Shreepur.

Bhaluka model police station Sub-Inspector Rahat Khan said the pickup went upside down after being hit by the bus. The deceased are Jamir Uddin, 35, and Hannan Munshi, 55.

The ten injured were admitted to a private hospital in Maowna. Police seized both of the vehicles, however, the drivers and helpers had fled.

Meanwhile, a five-year-old boy Nazim died in a road accident at Tumchar in Laxmipur sadar when a goods- laden truck rammed over him around 7am. Nazim is son of Mafiul Haque, who is a local of the area.

At Mirsarai in Chittagong a worker, Ershad Khan, 40, died on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway when an unidentified vehicle rammed him over on Thursday night.

Another passerby was killed in a road accident at Majibnagar under Hatiya upazila in Noakhali on Thursday night. The victim was identified as Anwar Hossain 35, son of Abdus Sahid of Hatiya municipality of the same upazila.

Quoting the locals, Md Fazle Rabbi, officer-in-charge of Hatiya police station, said a human hauler hit him in Majibnagar near Jhajmara bajar while he was crossing the road and left him dead on the spot.

In another incident, a bicycle rider was crushed to death under the wheels of a speeding truck at Bejpara on Jhenaidah-Jessore Highway under Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah yesterday in the afternoon.

The victim was identified as Krishna Das, 45, of Kaliganj.
