Mother condemns militant son

Update : 27 Feb 2014, 09:25 PM

Jama’atul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB) activist Salehi’s mother Shamsunnahar has called upon the nation to shun the path her accursed son was following.

She said this while talking to the BSS at the militant’s ancestral home.

Salauddin, also known as Salehi, was condemned to death. He was one of the three top militants who were snatched away from a prison van last Sunday while they were being taken to Mymensingh court from Gazipur’s Kashimpur prison.

He still remains at large. As Salehi hails from Narayanganj, law enforcers are conducting raids in different places of the district. Salehi’s ancestral home is in Pathanbari of Bandar upazila of Narayanganj where they have a two-storey concrete house. When the house was identified, Salehi’s maternal grandfather, who lives on the ground floor, was outraged to hear his name. “Because of him, the family has suffered a lot. We will be happy if he dies,” he said.

Despite mild protests from him, the correspondent took the stairs to the top floor where Salehi’s father Rafiqul Islam was stretched out on a bed.

Salehi’s mother was beside her bed-ridden husband. Through her tears, she said Salehi had been arrested in 2004. After hearing the news of his son’s involvement in militancy and his arrest, his father had suffered a stroke.

Since then, he has been lying on the bed. The mother said Salehi had been a very good student. He got a merit scholarship in the class V examination.

After that he enrolled at Sylhet Polytechnic and later at Dhaka’s Tejgaon Polytechnic Institute, where he pursued studies in engineering for a diploma. The parents had hoped that the son would establish himself as a successful engineer one day after completing his studies.

The tearful mother said: “We do not care about him anymore. His father has abandoned him. He is no longer our son. I appeal to all boys to refrain themselves from the path of militancy.”

District Police Superintendent Syed Nurul Islam, said Salehi had been the third in command of Bangla Bhai.He has no contacts with the family since 2004.

On last Sunday, a militant attack on a prison van at Trishal of Mymensingh killed a police constable and freed three convicted fellows, two of who were death row convicts while the other was given life-term imprisonment.
