Police station to be set up in Hatirjheel area

Update : 27 Feb 2014, 07:48 PM

A police station will be set up in Hatirjheel project area with a view to ensuring security of passers-by and  commuters.

A letter would be sent to the Home Ministry to set up a police station for ensuring safety in the Hatirjheel area, said a press release of Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

The decision came in a meeting held at the ministry yesterday that advised to complete the Dasherkandi sewerage treatment plant soon.

The Hatirjheel-Begunbari integrated development project aims to conserve rain water, improve the water quality in the canal, reduce water-logging in the capital and maintain environmental balance.

Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said: “Hatirjheel project is an important project of the country now.

Apart from Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, all concerned public companies need to consider the project as their own.”

He said because of the delay in the construction of the plant, unfiltered water was entering through the Balu River.

Hatirjheel-Begunbari canal connects with the river Balu, which later joins the Shitalakkhya.

Upon completion of the plant, the wastes generated in the residential areas surrounding the Hatirjheel would be passed through another drain; as a result, there would be no waste in Hatirhjeel during dry season, said the minister.

However, a few wastes might pass with rain during the rainy seasons, he added.
