Second phase upazila polls underway

Election to 115 upazila parishads in the second phase is underway on Thursday.

A total of 1,376 candidates from the ruling Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party and Jamaat-e-Islami are contesting in the polls.

The voting started around 8am and will continue till 4pm without any break. 

Sources said Maheshkhali upazila polls would be held in March instead of Thursday.

A total of 515 candidates are contesting for the chairman post, 521 for vice-chairman and 340 for reserved woman vice-chairman.

EC officials said the EC had appointed 8,136 presiding officers and 108,872 polling officers to hold the polls.

Army, RAB, police, BGB and Ansar have been deployed in the election areas and stern security measures are taken to prevent any untoward incident. The commission appointed 464 executive and 116 judicial magistrates, EC officials said.

Meanwhile, 83 upazila polls in the third phase will be held on March 15, 92 upazilas in fourth phase on March 23 and 74 upazilas in the fifth phase on March 31. 

The first phase polls were held on February 19 in 97 upazilas.
