Miscreants have attacked Sarbojanin Durga Temple, an old Hindu temple and damaged several Hindu idols at Bathaniachala area of Bowali union of Kaliakair upazila, Gazipur early Wednesday.
The miscreants, under the banner of ‘Devoted Muslims,’ have also threatened the Hindus of the area.
In a note left on the spot, they said: “Stop statue worship or move to India, otherwise, we will launch bomb attacks on the temples.”
The assault and such a threat came just three days afterIndia’s Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s comment as Hindu migrants from Bangladesh must be accommodated in India and detention camps would be done away with once his party comes to power.
"Miscreants broke all the idols immediately after those were installed," said general secretary of Sarbojanin Durga Temple Committee Surja Kumar Serkar.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliakair police station Omar Faruque said miscreants had attacked the temple on Tuesday night and damaged several idols along with Durga idol when its warden went home after worshipping.
“A case has been filed by general secretary of executive committee of the temple. However, no one had been arrested so far in this connection,” he added.
Kaliakair upazila UNO Habibur Rahaman visited the spot and assured locals of taking adequate administrative and security measures in the area.
