Update : 26 Feb 2014, 05:56 AM

Abdul Kader Siddiqui has been declared ineligible to contest the Tangail 8 by-election for reasons involving loan default, concerned officials have said.

Sakhipur upazila Election Officer Habiba Akhtar ruled Kader Siddiqui illegal after ending verification of nomination papers on Wednesday morning.

Krishak Sramik Janata League President Kader Siddiqui had submitted his nomination for the Tangail 8 (Basail-Sakhipur) by-poll on February 23.

The constituency fell vacant after ruling Awami League lawmaker from the seat Shawkat Momen died in a heart attack on January 20 this year.

The Tangail 8 by-election is scheduled to take place on March 29. The last date for submitting nomination was Sunday.

Returning Officer Mohammad Khurshid Anwar said nominations for Jatiya Party's Ashraf Siddiqui and rebel Awami League candidte Abu Sayeed have also been annulled.

“Ashraf Siddiqui has been annulled for loan default. Abu Sayeed did not sign on his affidavit,” he said. “Kader Siddiqui has also been annulled for loan default.”

The candidate for Awami League in this by-election is Anupam Shahjahan Joy. Three of his opponents have been ruled out from contesting.

Kader Siddiqui, a former Awami Legue leader, supported the BNP and boycotted the January 5 national election over demands for a caretaker government.
