Robber killed in 'gunfight' with police in Satkhira

A robber has been killed in a “gunfight” with police in Shyamnagar of Satkhira on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Ashraf Ali Gazi, son of Fazar Ali Gazi, of Kurikahnia village of Ashasuni upazila of the district.

Shyamnagar police station Officer-in-Charge Sagir Mia said: “Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a drive at Pakhimara village.”

“Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers hurled crude bombs and opened fire at the police that triggered a gunfight,” he said.

The OC said Ashraf Ali was found with bullet-wounds from the spot.

Later, he was declared dead when rushed to Shyamnagar Upazila Health complex.

Police claimed that Sub-Inspector Ashraful Islam and Constables Salimullah and Milon had been injured in the gunfight.

Meanwhile, police recovered a gun, a cartridge of gun, some bullet cases anda machete from the spot.

Sagir Mia said: “Ashraf operated under the disguise of several names, sometimes by Aslam and sometimes Asrab alias Raja.”

“He had been involved in incidents of robberiesat Shyamnagar, Ashashuni, Khulna and Sundarbans. Some 19 cases including murder and robbery were filed against him,” he said.
