Saif Uddin Ahmed Manik, former Chhatra League leader and an activist of the 90’s anti-autocracy movement has started a hunger strike in a bid to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He started a token hunger strike at the Cox’s Bazar Shaheed Minar premises around 5pm on Saturday before the prime minister’s scheduled visit in the district.
Manik told the Dhaka Tribune that he would continue fasting until he gets a chance to meet the premier and talk to her about his “miserable condition.”
Sources said former BCL leader Manik, a resident of Chakoria upazila was severely tortured in the Chittagong university campus during the nationwide anti-autocracy movement in 1990 against Ershad’s regime.
His tendons had been cut and he was kept behind bars.
Manik served BCL, a student wing of ruling Awami League as a senior executive member of the district committee, President of Chakoria upazila, Chakoria College.
District Chhatra League President Ali Ahmed and general secretary Abu Taher along with other leaders and activists have expressed solidarity with the token hunger strike.
