Chittagong BNP demands smooth gas supply

The city unit of BNP in Chittagong yesterday morning threatened to go for tougher movement, including shutdowns and strikes, if the government does not ensure smooth gas supply for the city people immediately.

Dr Shahadat Hossain, general secretary of the city unit of BNP, gave the threat at a human chain held in front of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited office around 10am. The city unit of BNP arranged the human chain demanding gas supply in Chittagong, where Dr Shahadat Hossain addressing as key speaker.

Residents of the port city are suffering daily because of inadequate gas supply, he said, adding that the government had taken no initiatives in their five-year tenure to solve the issue.

Besides, different industries and factories which are depended on gas for their production are facing troubles as a result of the unavailability of gas, he said. The power plants of the port city were also facing problems for the same reason. In consequence, people are facing frequent load-shedding.

Later, BNP leaders handed over a memorandum to Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Managing Director Abdul Matin, demanding immediate steps to solve gas crisis.
