BOA mulls Commonwealth and Asian Games plans

Update : 20 Feb 2014, 04:24 PM

Bangladesh will take part in 10 disciplines of 2014 Commonwealth Games which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland and run from July 23 to August 3. Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) informed the respective federations through letters yesterday after finalising the disciplines.

A total of 30 athletes from 10 disciplines excluding 17 coaches, managers and officials are expected to tour Glasgow. However, the names of the athletes have not been finalised and BOA asked the federations to confirm it soon.

Eight players from shooting, four from weightlifting, three each from cycling, table tennis, boxing, two each from athletics, swimming, badminton, wrestling, and one from gymnastics are expected to get tickets for Glasgow.

Shooting and boxing started their preparation on January 10 and the preparation for other eight disciplines is expected to begin from the first week of March.

Meanwhile, BOA training and development committee proposed 136 athletes from 21 disciplines in the preliminary process for the 17th Asian Games. The largest sporting event in Asia is scheduled to take place in Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4.

The committee also proposed to include Kabaddi (men)discipline that was earlier ignored by BOA due to the men team’s lack of activity in recent times but women’s kabaddi were on the list from the beginning. The proposal regarding the 21 disciplines will be one of the few issues to be discussed in the next BOA executive committee meeting.

Following the recommendation of the federation, if men’s kabaddi gets into the list then Wushu will likely be excluded from the list of 21 disciplines. Bangladesh kabaddi team has a fine record in the Asian Games after being inducted in 1990 and SA Games where they won gold in the last edition in India.  The other 20 disciplines are swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, cricket (men’s and women’s), cycling, fencing, football (men), golf, gymnastics, hockey, kabaddi (men’s and women’s), karate, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, beach volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.
