A Chittagong court yesterday indicted six persons, including Yousuf Ali Mridha, former general manager of Bangladesh Railway (BR) East Zone, in a case regarding irregularities in recruitment of assistant chemists.
The Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Mujibor Rahman passed the order, said Omar Fuad, bench clerk of the court. The court had fixed March 13 for recording witness deposition, he added.
All the accused in the case are on the run, while the court earlier issued arrest warrant against them.
Apart from Mridha, the others accused are former senior social welfare officer Golam Kibria, former additional chief mechanical engineer of BR (East) Hafizur Rahman, and three job seekers Sultana Begum, Jahirul Islam and Ganesh Chandra Shil, who were allegedly involved in the corruption.
Sources said Hafizur was the convener and Kibria was member secretary of the recruitment committee.
The three job seekers allegedly tried to get employed in exchange of bribe, said Mahmudul Haque Mahmud, prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Commission in Chittagong court.
On the other hand, the three accused railway officials, in collaboration with each other, allegedly approved and recommended the failed candidates instead of the passed candidates.
SM Rashedur Reza, deputy assistant director of the ACC in Chittagong, lodged the case with Kotwali police station on September 13, 2012 accusing the six.
The charge sheet of the case was submitted before the court on August 18, 2013.
Sources at BR said the East Zone issued seven advertisements in October and November, 2010 to fill up 3,419 vacant posts in 38 categories.
The Border Guard Bangladesh personnel seized Tk70 lakh from a car of former Assistant Personal Secretary Omar Faruk of the then Railways Minister Suranjit Sen Gupta on April 9, 2012.
Two of the accused railway officials and Railway Nirapatta Bahini Dhaka Divisional Commandant Enamul Haque were in the car.
Driver of the car, Ali Azam, had been missing mysteriously as after he took the car to BGB Headquarters with the money and the officials on that day.
Suranjit Sen Gupta resigned and his APS was suspended following the incident. Mridha and Enamul were also suspended temporarily in this connection.
