A Chittagong court on Wednesday indicted six persons including Yousuf Ali Mridha, former general manager (GM) of Bangladesh Railway (BR) east zone, in a case regarding irregularity in recruitment of assistant chemists.
The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Session Judge, SM Mujibor Rahman, framed charges against the six in absentia of the accused, said Omar Fuad, bench clerk of the court
The court has also fixed March 13 for recording deposition.
All the accused are on the run while the court issued arrest warrant against them earlier.
Apart from Mridha, the other accused are Golam Kibria, former senior social welfare officer, Hafizur Rahman, former additional chief mechanical engineer of BR (East), three job seekers Sultana Begum, Jahirul Islam and Ganesh Chandra Shil were allegedly involved in the bribery for the assistant chemist post.
Of the six accused, the three job seekers, who allegedly tried to get employed in exchange of bribe, said Mahmudul Haque Mahmud, prosecutor of ACC in Chittagong court.
The charge against the three railway officials is that they, with the collaboration with each other, approved and recommended the failed candidates instead of passed candidates for assistant chemist post by doing unfair means in examination papers and tabulation sheets.
SM Rashedur Reza, deputy assistant director (DAD) of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Chittagong, lodged the case with Kotwali Police Station on September 13, 2012 accusing the six persons.
The charge sheet of the case was submitted before the court August 18, 2013.
Sources at BR said the east zone issued seven advertisements in October and November, 2010 to fill up 3419 vacant posts in 38 categories.
It might be mentioned that, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel seized Tk 70 lakh from a car of Assistant Personal Secretary (APS) Omar Faruk of the then Railway Minister Suranjit Sen Gupta on April 9, 2012.
The accused two railway officials and Railway Nirapatta Bahini Dhaka Divisional Commandant Enamul Haque were in the car.
The driver of the car, Ali Azam, had been missing mysteriously as he took the car BGB Headquarters with the money and the officials on that day.
The then Railway Minister resigned following the incident and his APS was suspended.
Mridha and Enamul were also suspended temporarily in this connection.
