An ousted candidate of the Awami League has boycotted the upazila parishad poll in Kajipur upazila, Sirajganj alleging irregularities during election.
Veteran freedom fighter Abul Kalam Azad brought allegations of poll-rigging and use of force against Awami League ticket-holder Mozammel Hoque Sarker.
He made the withdrawal at 11am on Wednesday while the first phase of upazila election was underway across 97 upazilas of the country.
Abul Kalam Azad also complained against the law enforcement agencies for taking no actions in this regard.
Kajipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Returning Officer Shafiul Islam said the military, elite force RAB and paramilitary BGB are deployed throughout.
“We looked into the complaints of Abul Kalam Azad, however we could find no truth in those allegations,” he said.
Former MP and Shechhaswebak League central committee Vice President Tanvir Shakil Joy said the allegations were Azad's strategy in consideration of a defeat beforehand.
Awami League ticket-holder Mozammel Hoque said Azad could not provide agents in most of the polling stations. “He has been campaigning against the poll in the last few days.”
“He has been claiming that the election will be unfair. That is why he has no other option other than to boycott the election,” he said.
