Rana Plaza Images win World Press Photo Awards

Two photographers from Bangladesh took home the awards in two categories from Spot News for their photographs of the Rana Plaza disaster of April 2013.

According to the list of winners from the 2014 photo contest of World Press Photo: Taslima Akhter, workers and women’s rights activists won 3rd prize in the singles category for her iconic photograph “Final Embrace.”

Taslima’s image that was taken on April 25, 2013 shows two victims embracing each other amid the rubble of the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse.

The other winner, Rahul Talukder won 3rd prize in the stories category for his images that give a sense of the Rana Plaza disaster that occurred on August 24, 2013 by showing a series of images from the aftermath of the collapsed building.

The photographs of the winners for the 57th annual World Press Photo contest were announced in Amsterdam on Friday, February 14.

The jury chair Gary Knight, a photographer as well as co-founder of the VII Photo Agency, selected a photo by American photographer John Stanmeyer of the VII Photo Agency as the World Press Photo of the Year (2014). The picture by John Stanmeyer was taken for National Geographic, it won 1ST prize in the Contemporary Issues category.
