BNP concerns over political ‘killings’

Update : 15 Feb 2014, 12:45 PM

Expressing grave concern over the “deaths” and “disappearances” of the party members across the country, the BNP has strongly condemned the “ongoing political killings and repressions.”

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed the disquiet by issuing a written statement on Saturday afternoon following the body recovery of a party leader, Jahangir Hossain, who was disappeared one month ago.

In the message, Fakhrul alleged that the present government was trying to create a “tense situation” by “killing, disappearing, arresting and repressing” the leaders and activists of the party across the country, in order to stay in power “forever.”

He said: “The Awami League government that has grabbed the power forcefully by holding a farcical poll wants to establish one-party rule in the country by killing and repressing the members of BNP.”

Forewarning the government, the BNP spokesperson said: “The Awami League government cannot stay in power by oppressing the opposition party members. The people of Bangladesh will not accept it and no one can establish one-party rule in the country.”

He urged the government to identify the killers of Jahangir and demanded their punishment.

Jahangir Hossain, a local BNP leader of Sirajganj district, returned to Bangladesh from Malaysia six months ago and went missing on January. Jahangir’s body was recovered today. He was the prime accused of Saiful Islam, the youth and sports secretary of Sirajganj Sadar upazila unit of AL, murder case.
