Speaker meets her Lokshabha counterpart

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury met her Indian Lokshabha counterpart Meira Kumar and discussed bilateral issues, the information ministry said on Thursday.

The two speakers have stressed for meetings between parliamentary representatives from both countries in order for heightened bilateral cooperation to be achieved.

Meira Kumar said India was interested in providing overall assistance for the strengthening of the parliamentary process in Bangladesh, the ministry handout said.

Bangladesh is of significant importance to India as a neighbour, Kumar said during the meeting, which was held in New Delhi on Wednesday.

India hopes for the establishment of Bangladesh as a prosperous and powerful nation, she said adding that the country also hopes for a stable situation in Bangladesh.

Shirin Chaudhury said India holds significant importance to Bangladesh as a neighbour, referring to the contribution of Delhi during the Liberation War.

Shirin Chaudhury is expected to hold a meeting with the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday afternoon and Lokshabha opposition Sushma Swaraj and Rajyashabha opposition Arun Jetli afterwards.
