Hasina: World community accepts poll results

Update : 05 Feb 2014, 04:52 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday said the international community had accepted the results of the 10th national election as an optimistic achievement.

“The international community has accepted the results of the last general elections in Bangladesh in a positive way against the ill motive of BNP-Jamaat, which was out to foil the poll through violence,” she told parliament.

Replying to a question from Awami League lawmaker AKM Rahmatullah during her scheduled question-answer session, Hasina said a good number of heads of states had hailed the government and sent messages to her upon becoming the primeminister for the third time.

“Ten countries, including the heads of the United Nations and other international organisations, also greeted me as the prime minister of the newly elected government,” she said. Hasina expressed hope that more greetings would come in.

The premier said numerous friendly countries and international organisations, including the USA and the European Union, had already expressed desires to continue work with newly formed government of Bangladesh.

She said the process of power transfer from an elected government to another according to the constituency had started through the 10th national election.

Replying to a question from independent MP Haji Mohammand Selim, Hasina said the government had introduced the “One house, one farm” project to free poor people from interest-mongers.

She said 1,038,000 families were getting benefits directly from the project.

Hasina said the government had taken an initiative to establish Palli Sanchay Bank to give the project a strong base. The bank will receive small amounts of deposits from poor people which would help create investment and self-employment opportunities for the depositors.

Replying to a supplementary question from Awami League MP Abdus Shahid, the prime minister said branches of the bank would be opened in phases.
