Three Ijtema devotees among five people were killed in separate incidents of road and train accidents in the capital on Sunday.
A father and his son among the devotees were killed as a bus crushed them under its wheels near their residences at Turag while they were on the way to attend the Ijtema at Tongi by a rickshaw.
The deceased devotees were identified as Md Giaus Uddin, 37 and his son Md Yiasin, 17.
Md Ripon, 15, of dour area in Ashulia was the other devotee who died.
Quoting the witnesses, police and relatives of the victims said a speeding bus hit a rickshaw carrying the devotees from the behind at Rustumpur in Turag when they were on their way to attend the Ijtema at around 10:30am.
Being hit by the bus, he skidded off the rickshaw and fell under the wheels of the bus that flew away leaving them at a critical condition. Locals caught the killer bus by chasing it, although the driver fled away.
Local people and police rushed them to Pongu Hospital at the capital where they succumbed to their injuries in the afternoon at around 4:00pm.
Sheikh Farid, officer-in-charge of Turag Police Station, said the bus had hit the rickshaw after its driver had lost the control over the steering of the bus causing the deaths of three devotees.
In another incident, the helper of the driver of a bus was crushed under the same bus at the capital’s Malibagh in the afternoon.
Identified as Md Yiasin, 30, was killed on the spot after he fell down under the wheels of the bus of Turag Paribahan while he was getting into the bus after collecting fare from the passengers.
“The helper of the driver fell under the wheels of the bus as the driver had started the vehicle before his helper could get into the bus,” said Kripa Sindhu Bala, OC of Rampura Police Station, and added, “We have arrested the bus driver and seized the bus.”
Besides, a 55-year-old man was killed after he skidded off the roof of a Tongi bound speeding train at Khilkhet at around 1:30pm.
