Update : 01 Feb 2014, 12:48 PM

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid MP on Saturday said students of any level should not be lined up to greet any ministers except the president and the prime minister.

He said: “The students should only line up for the president and the prime minister as they are the two top personalities of the state and it would be a matter of good luck to see them.”

The minister made the statement while addressing the inaugural session of the 43rd National Winter Sports and Athletics Competition 2014 at Barisal Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabat Stadium on Saturday morning.

Nahid said: “There was a clear instruction from the ministry in this regard and it was followed in last five-year. However recently, some over-enthusiasts started the practice again violating the existing instructions of the government.

It should be stopped and prevented by the cooperation of all concerned,” the education minister added. Mentioning that students should not be used to welcome any political figure outside the institution premises, the minister said: “If any lawmaker, minister or any distinguished guest goes to visit any place or institution, he should be greeted by only the authority concerned within the institution compound.” Barisal Education Board has arranged the competition in association with Bangladesh National School and Madrasa Sports Association.

Professor Fahima Khatun, director general, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, presided over the inaugural session of the event. Among others, AL lawmakers Advocate Shawkat Hossain Hiron and Talukdar Md Yunus, Secretary for Education Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Dhaka Education Board Chairman Prof Taslima Begum, Chairman of Barisal Education Board Professor Dr Bimal Krishna Majumdar, Divisional Commissioner Nurul Amin, Deputy Commissioner Shohidul Alam and Secretary of the Bangladesh National School and Madrasa Sports Association Farhana Huq addressed the programme. A total of 672 competitors from 231 educational institutions of the country participated in the final round of 35 events in the five-day competition.
