The Joint Forces have held 84 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir for their alleged involvement in a clash that occurred at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet on January 26.
They were detained from several messes near the university on Thursday night.
Jalalabad police station Officer-in-Charge Gausul Hossain said: “Identities of the detainees are being verified. Among them, there are several Shibir supporters who are students of the university.”
University Proctor Himadri Shekhar Roy said: “We have asked the law enforcement agencies to ensure that no innocent student is harassment.”
On January 26, the activists of ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir engaged in an altercation after a Shibir leader’s motorcycle had been torched on the campus.
The Chhatra Shibir members went on a rampage during the clashes. Later, the university authorities and the police filed separate cases over the incident.
