A tribunal convicted eight people on Thursday and sentenced them to life imprisonment for killing two brothers in Gazipur in 2000.
Dhaka Speedy Trail Tribunal 4 Judge ABM Nizamul Hoque gave the verdict on Thursday afternoon.
The tribunal also fined them Tk20,000 each, for which a failure in payment would result in an additional year of imprisonment.
The convicts were identified as Abdul Ali, Nurul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Fozlul Hoque, Mohammad Rahmat Ali Sikdar, Hasen Ali, Hazrat Ali and Zakir Hossain.
Meanwhile, the tribunal sentenced eight others to seven years imprisonment with labour and acquitted five others accused, as the complaint against them was not proved.
The eight who faced a seven year sentence were also required to pay a Tk5000 fine, for which a failure in payment would result in an additional six months of imprisonment.
On December 6, 2000, Makbul Dewan and his brother Kolimuddin Dewan were killed in the Golachipa area under Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur over a land dispute.
On December 7, the deceased’s elder bother Md Shakhawat Hossain filed a case against 21 people with Kaliakoir police station.
Of the total 21 accused, Abdul Ali has been absconding since the incident.
On July 15, 2003, Detective Branch (DB) and investigation officer of the case Md Tofazzal Hossain submitted the charge sheet to the court.
