A leader of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of BNP, was shot in a clash with police in Satkhira Sadar upazila, Satkhira on Wednesday afternoon.
The injured was Ziarul Islam, 36, son of Azimuddin from the village of Dohakhula, a joint convener of Jubo Dal’s Bokharajpur unit.
Satkhira sadar police station Officer Enamul Hoque said more than 100 miscreants attacked when law enforcers were on a special drive to catch suspects of regular cases, around 12noon.
He said the instigators set off crude bombs and even opened fire at the law enforcers.
The police, in retaliation, fired back which triggered a full-on clash, he said. Ziarul was shot at a certain instance of the altercation, while others managed to flee.
Ziarul was later admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital. Confirming Ziarul’s identity, the OC said: “There are several cases filed against Ziarul.”
The hospital’s on-duty doctor Elika Rani Ghosh said Ziarul was being treated in the operation theater.
Ziarul’s mother claimed the police picked him and escorted him to Ramchandrapur circle. She added that the police willingly asked him to flee before shooting him down.
Satkhira is known to be a stronghold of the Jamaat-e-Islami and is a “vulnerable” district where the joint forces are cracking down on violence.
