Custom officials arrested one with gold made chains weighing around 3kg at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport late Monday night.
The man was identified as Joj Miah, 52.
According to the customs officials, the gold made chain worth around Tk1.2 crore was seized by searching the luggage of Joj Miah after he had arrived at Dhaka airport late Monday night by a flight from a Malaysian airport.
Assistant Commissioner Wazed Ali of the Customs Department at the airport said: “Acting on a tip-off, they searched the luggage of Joj Miah and found the gold made chains.”
The recovery was made two days into the recovery of 2.3kg gold by arresting another Bangladeshi on January immediate after he had arrived at Dhaka from Dubai.
The customs officials said the passport of detained Joj Miah shows that he had been used to travelling from Dhaka to Malaysia, Dubai and different other countries frequently.
Sub-inspector Kamrul Islam of Airport police station said the man was handed over to them after filing a case in connection with the smuggling of the gold.
Police and customs officials suspect Joj Miah to be a member of a gang involved in the smuggling of gold through the airport.
Earlier on January 25, the customs officials seized 20 bars of smuggled gold weighting around 2.3 kg by arresting a Dubai expatriate at a flight of Qatar Airways at Shahjalal International Airport.
Identified as Nazrul Islam, 43, of Comilla district, the Dubai expatriate was arrested with the gold worth more than Tk1 crore immediate after the flight arrived at Dhaka from Dubai via Doha in Qatar in the afternoon. He was also suspected to be another member of the gold smuggling ring.
Around 60 gangs of smugglers are engaged in the smuggling of gold, currencies and precious materials through the airport in association with a section of unscrupulous officials and employees of different government and non-government agencies at the airport.
Earlier on January 22, the customs officials seized 1 crore of Indian rupees smuggled into the country from Dubai and a captain of Biman Bangladesh Airlines was arrested with currencies worth Tk20 lakh two weeks ago.
More than 600kg of gold and currencies of several hundred crores were seized in 2013, said airport sources.
