High Court moved for Biranganas

Update : 27 Jan 2014, 08:20 AM

The High Court issued a rule seeking an answer from the government as to why Biranganas, women violated during 1971, would not get facilities similar to freedom fighters.

Bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Habibul Gani issued the rule in response to a writ petition on Monday.

The bench also sought a response as to why a gazette would not be issued listing all the names of the Biranganas.

The bench also asked why it should not declare illegal the lack of action regarding Biranganas taken in the past 42 years since independence.

The government was given four weeks to respond to the ruling, Deputy Attorney General Mokleseur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.

The writ petition was lodged by Sameha Ishar, member of an association of a girls school in Sirajganj. Advocate Salma Ali moved the petition to the court.
