Update : 26 Jan 2014, 06:42 PM

Khulna district administration has taken measures to ensure security to the minority communities in the city and nine upazilas under the district.

Alongside the regular force, it has deployed Village Defense Police (VDP) in 68 unions under the upazilas to prevent any kind of violence against the members of minority communities, their households, establishments, temples and idols.

The Deputy Commissioner Md Anis Mahmud said the security measures were taken upon receiving a letter from the Deputy Secretary of Home Ministry Md Khairul Kabir on January 9.

Mobile courts are in operation while VDP members are on duty round-the-clock under the monitoring of the upazila nirbahi officers (UNO), he said.

UNO of Batiaghata upazila Shanti Moni Chakma said: “I have always engaged the union parisad chairmen with Hindus in their respective areas so that members of the Hindu community did not feel insecure. People should also be assured that there is no bad omen in the locality. Our slogan is ‘Unity is strength’.”

Khulna Police Super Golam Rouf Khan said all the officers-in-charge of the nine police stations in the district had been directed to keep a vigil on the temples.

There are 531 temples in 68 unions under Khulna, he said.
