Eight policemen were suspended after Tk16.4 crore was looted from the vault of a Sonali Bank Limited branch in Kishoreganj Sadar upazila on Sunday.
Kishoreganj police Superintendent Anwar Hossain Khan suspended eight policemen, including the guard in-charge Rasel Mia, after the incident.
These policemen were deployed in the barrack located in the basement of the branch for security purpose of the vault, the SP said.
He dubbed the incident sensational. “A gang may be behind the incident. The matter is being looked into seriously.”
The bank, the main branch of the district located on Isha Kha road, was broken into, what authorities found out around 3:30pm on Sunday.
The miscreants dug a passageway into the vault and looted about Tk16.4 crore, manager of the branch Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan said.
Senior Cash Officer of the branch, Mohosinul Haque, said there was at least Tk250 crore stashed up inside the vault.
Cash officers Mohosinul Haque and Hassan Ahmed Moyeen found the vault broken after they went to check in the afternoon, manager Humayun said.
The passageway was found to have been dug from a room of an adjacent building. One Sohel, who was a tenant of the room, is now absconding.
Another teanant Marzia Akhter said she heard loud noises from inside Sohel’s flat during the night for some time.
However, details into how the bank was broken into was not clear. A police barrack was located at the basement for security purpose of the vault.
