Consultative committee of businessmen soon to help adopt policies

The government would soon form a consultative committee comprised of business community members to accommodate their recommendations in formulating policies to boost the country’s trade and commerce.

“The committee will help make major business decisions,” Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed told a meeting in Dhaka yesterday.

The minister spoke about the committee at his maiden meeting with the country’s top business leaders after taking charge of the ministry.

Floating the idea, the minister urged the businessmen to work together and diversify products for increasing the country’s export earnings.

“As the businessmen are the main driving force of our economy, they will have to continue efforts in the country’s economic development that has been badly hampered in the wake of devastating political unrest,” Tofail said.

Commerce Secretary M Mahbub Ahmed, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, president of International Chamber of Commerce and  Industry (ICC,B) Mahbubur Rahman, presidents of DCCI, BGMEA, BKMEA, MCCI and leaders of other trade associations, among others, attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, BSS adds, Tofail proposed to form a regional forum named Bangladesh-India-China-Myanmar (BICM) to boost the trade in South Asia.

“India and China have already started dialogue to form the regional forum ... we too gave them our consent,” he said.
