Member of Parliament (MP) from Tangail-8 constituency and Awami League Leader Shawkat Momen Shajahan died from a stroke in the early hours of Monday.
Doctors declared him dead around 6am after he was rushed to Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex in Tangail following the stroke. He was 66.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Mohammad Anwar Hossain said he rushed to the residence of the MP after the family called him around 5:36am.
“When I reached there, Shawkat Momen was being carried into his car. I was with him while he was being brought to the hospital,” the doctor said.
“I declared him dead in the hospital around 5:45am. Symptoms say Shawkat Momen died from stroke,” the doctor told the Dhaka Tribune.
The four-time Awami League MP Shawkat Momen was elected uncontested from this constituency in the latest 10thparliamentary elections held on January 5.
Earlier, he was elected from Tangail-8 in 1986, the by-polls of 1999 and 2008.
Sakhipur upazila Awami League President Mohammad Kutubuddin said the body will be taken to Dhaka for Namaj-e-Janaza at the Jatiya Sangsad premises.
The second Janaza will be held at Basail upazila field around 3pm followed by another at Sakhipur upazila field around 4:30pm, he told the Dhaka Tribune.
Shawkat Momen will be laid to rest beside his father at Women's Residential College, the college established by the late MP, after the fourth Janaza at the premises of local Surja Tarun Sristi Sangha.
