NHRC chief blames Jamaat for communal attacks

Update : 18 Jan 2014, 08:27 PM

National Human Rights Commission chief Mizanur Rahman yesterday said the Jamaat-e-Islami and its students wing Islami Chhatra Shibir conducted the terrible attacks on minority people in recent days across the country.

“The anti- liberation force, which assisted the Pakistanis in 1971, is now attacking on the minority people with a view to foil our countries progress,” said Mizanur.

The NHCR chief said this in a discussion program titled Dialogues on Peace, Security and Democracy at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban in Dhaka University, organised by Department of Peace and Conflict in collaboration with the Oxfam Bangladesh. He urged the government to take action against the miscreants and to support the affected people.

In his inaugural speech, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said: “If the government fails to provide security of the minority people it is impossible for it to reinforce democracy.”

The VC urged the government to identify every miscreant and to ensure exemplary punishment for them. He also said the event would be helpful for the lawmakers of our country as it indicates for them what to do next.

Peace and Conflict Studies Chairman Prof Jahid Arefin presided over the programme.
