The BNP leader, prime accused in the case over attack on Asaduzzaman Noor in Nilphamari was found dead in Sadar upazila of the district on Saturday morning.
Police recovered the body of Golam Rabbani, 40, general secretary of Upamari union BNP, from Palashbari area around 7:30am. A bullet shell was found at scene.
Nilphamari Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahjahan Pasha confirmed the Dhaka Tribune of the incident and said the body was in police custody.
Police could not ascertain the reason of death, but suspected that the victim was shot from the bullet shell found beside the body, according to the OC.
On December 14, five people died and several others were injured when the convoy of Awami League leader Asaduzzaman Noor was attacked during polls-campaign.
The attack on the Awami Legaue leader who is also a cultural personality created a sensation during that time. Jamaat-e-Islami were blamed for the attack.
A lawsuit was filed against 14 named and over 1400 anonymous others. Local unit BNP leader Golam Rabbani topped the list of the accused named.
Asaduzzaman Noor is the cultural affairs minister of the Awami League government that came to power following the 10th parliamentary elections on January 5.
